Say Goodbye to Motion Sickness

For years, sim racers have been stuck in a toxic relationship with virtual reality. You either sacrificed resolution for immersion “hello, screen door effect” or sacrificed your bank account for a headset that caused motion sickness with low frame rates, but we’ve now come to the point where foveated rendering and eye tracking have solved the “high-end” problem.

Behold… The Pimax Crystal Super, a game changing piece of hardware that makes you question your own reality.
At around $1800 USD, this isn't an impulse buy. It’s an investment. But after putting it through the wringer on iRacing, the verdict is in: this is the paradigm shift we’ve been waiting for. The secret sauce?

It’s not just the resolution; it’s the glass.

While competitors use plastic lenses that smear light (yes the one you’re using now, really is made out of plastic), Pimax upends the competition and uses glass aspheric lenses. The result is edge-to-edge clarity that is frankly startling. The lenses offer superior VR visual quality, featuring 99% light transmittance, reduced distortion, minimizing glare, halos and god rays. Not only that.. They are scratch-resistant and durable, providing a clear and immersive experience. In fact.. You aren't just seeing the track; you're reading the tire pressure font on your dashboard without squinting.

The Real-World Shake Down

Specs are great, but how does it actually feel when you're three wide into Turn 1?

The "Sweet Spot" is Massive: The visual clarity isn't just in the center; it's everywhere. Locking it to 72Hz provides the perfect balance of smoothness and performance headroom.

Comfort Surprise: Despite looking like a beast, the weight distribution is on point. After a solid hour of racing, the cooling features did the job—no sweaty face pad, no fogging. Plus, for the spectacle-wearing crowd, large glasses fit comfortably inside with their comfort pad upgrade.

The Tracking Quirk: Out of the box, the inside-out tracking can have a couple issues if you’re sitting in front of a massive monitor (it uses screen reflections as reference points). So if you prefer to not turn your monitor off or deal with moving objects in front of you Depending on where your sim rig is located, the fix for this is the optional Lighthouse faceplate. It turns the tracking from "pretty great" to sub-millimeter precision, which is non-negotiable for motion rigs.

Audio & Passthrough: Out of the box, the audio is sub-par, however the DMAS headphone upgrade brings a top-tier experience, though seasoned audiophiles might argue the G2 or Index still holds a slight edge, those headsets are now in the past. The only thing to look forward to in the future which isn’t available with the Crystal Super would be saying goodbye to black and white passthrough. In 2026, we expected color, but you don't buy a Ferrari for the cup holders.

Our Verdict

Pimax has pulled off a redemption arc worthy of a movie script. They’ve moved past their "great specs, messy execution" phase and are genuinely listening to the community.

If you are chasing the ultimate visual fidelity in iRacing, the Crystal Super isn't just an upgrade; it’s the endgame. The modular optical engine means you aren't buying a disposable gadget—you're buying a platform. For the dedicated racer, that makes the price tag a lot easier to swallow.
