Pimax SuperOpen: Launching a New Chapter in Our 10th Anniversary

To mark Pimax’s 10th anniversary, we are introducing SuperOpen — a long-term initiative proposed by our founder Robin Weng to build an open, sustainable development ecosystem around Crystal Super. SuperOpen is not a new product, and it is not a marketing campaign. It is a commitment to a more open future for VR hardware

Why We Created SuperOpen

Over the past decade, VR has grown rapidly, but it has also been held back by some structural problems: optics that require compromises, rendering workloads that keep rising, and ecosystems that remain isolated from one another.

Most importantly, consumers are still forced to replace entire headsets every few years simply to keep up with progress. We believe this approach is wasteful, and it does not reflect how modern technology should evolve.

If a VR headset could evolve the way a desktop computer does — if you could swap the optical engine, change the front shell, replace the facial interface, and adapt the device as new modules arrive — VR hardware would no longer be something you discard, but something you continually refine.

Crystal Super was built on exactly this idea. It shifts VR hardware from a fixed device to a platform that can continue to change with new innovations.

A Platform Ready for the Next Ten Years

During the early stages of Crystal Super, our teams focused extensively on solving the technical and production challenges that come with a modular device. Today, those issues have been resolved, global users are actively using the device, and both manufacturing and supply have reached a stable, mature stage.

With the foundation now solid, this is the right moment to open the platform and invite the community in.

Real innovation comes from sharing.” — Pimax Founder Robin Weng

Pimax has always believed that openness is the catalyst for progress.

With SuperOpen, we are making the most comprehensive release of development resources in our history:

Tools and Resources for Developers

Developers can work with our Platform SDK, XR SDK, Driver SDK, Hardware Development Kit, and full Crystal Super 3D models.

This is only the starting point — the SDK will continue to evolve, and we will expand it based on what the community builds.

Exploring New Hardware Ideas, Together

We are already experimenting with new module concepts and inviting community input throughout the process, including:

  • An E-Ink optical engine optimized for long reading sessions

  • A 70 PPD clarity module for cinematic content

  • A liquid-cooling solution for extended comfort

  • A facial-tracking front shell for expressive avatars

  • A high-fidelity microphone module for spatial voice capture

  • Specialized “Pilot” and “Racer” editions for sim enthusiasts

Some of these are early concepts, others are in engineering evaluation, but all will grow through community involvement.

A Community Designed to Empower Creation

To support collaboration, we have opened:

  • The SuperOpen section on OpenMR

Once you join, you can:

  • Share ideas and proposals, and launch your own creative projects with support from the community

  • Collaborate on plugins, hardware modules, and experimental features

  • Receive technical feedback directly from Pimax engineering teams

  • Access broader support across the supply chain, promotion, and development resources

  • SuperOpen is more than a developer hub — it is an ecosystem that accelerates innovation.

As Robin Weng puts it, “Crystal Super is not a finish line. It is the beginning of something that will keep evolving. When hardware and software grow together with the community, the result is longer product life, less waste, and more sustainable innovation.

How to Join SuperOpen

  • If you are new to Crystal Super
Enter the code SuperOpen when purchasing Crystal Super, and your account will automatically be added to the program.

  • If you already own Crystal Super
Join our Discord server and submit your request in the Announcement channel.

Shaping the Future of VR, Together

SuperOpen is our anniversary milestone, but more importantly, it is a commitment to openness, collaboration, and long-term thinking.

We invite creators, developers, engineers, and VR enthusiasts to join us in redefining how VR hardware evolves — not through closed systems, but through shared ideas and continuous growth.

Welcome to SuperOpen.
Let’s build the next decade of VR together.
