Cameron Butterfield: From VR Pioneer to Pimax Roadshow Host

Virtual reality is not just about pixels and refresh rates—it’s about people, passion, and the journeys that lead us deeper into these immersive worlds. Few embody this spirit better than Cameron Butterfield.

Cameron is a VR veteran with rich experiences, and his professional life is equally diverse—he is a Chief Financial Officer, an accountant, a journalist, and a content creator. In his free time, he enjoys 3D printing, mountain biking, and sharing knowledge with the world through his cButters Tech YouTube channel. Just as he is an explorer and creator in life, Cameron has always been an adventurer in VR.

I was one of the original owners of the Nintendo Virtual Boy,” he recalls. “Ever since the days of Google Cardboard and the Samsung GearVR, I’ve been experimenting with VR.

The Pimax Journey

Cameron first heard about Pimax during its original Kickstarter campaign. He later tried the 5K+ and the 8KX, and was a day-one order of the Pimax Crystal. Of course, the journey wasn’t always smooth—due to GPU compatibility issues, his early experience was cut short. But everything changed when he got his hands on Crystal Light.

“The Crystal Light blew me away. The 120Hz refresh rate, the resolution, the lenses—it finally felt like I had a true successor to the Valve Index,” he explains. “When I started playing Beat Saber with it, I immediately scored higher. You can read the notes from farther away, and the fast refresh gives you an edge. It’s a complete game-changer.

After experiencing the Crystal Light, there was no turning back on the high-definition path. Cameron also picked up a Pimax Crystal Super, which let him revisit older games and still discover something new in them.

With the Super, for the first time, I had a resolution beyond what I practically needed,” Cameron said with a smile. “The field of view and clarity in Half-Life: Alyx—it was just on another level. You really felt like you were inside the game.

He also brought the Crystal Super to the Utah Retro Gaming Expo, sharing that next-generation experience with a community of passionate gamers.

Why host a roadshow?

As a YouTube content creator, Cameron is selective about the brands he works with. His audience trusts his judgment, and he won’t recommend something he doesn’t believe in himself.

“The Crystal Light really surprised me,” he admitted. “In the past, I almost gave up on Pimax because of some rough experiences. But after trying the Light, it was different—it’s brilliant, without the old limitations. It’s the first PCVR headset in years that made me step away from the Quest ecosystem. More people need to know about it—it’s a great upgrade path for Index or Rift owners, and it’s also a fantastic first PCVR headset.”

That passion for sharing is what led Cameron to host the Pimax Roadshow. And for us, it wasn’t just his journey—it became a two-way commitment between Cameron and Pimax.

Salt Lake City Roadshow

On August 30th, 2025, Cameron will host a hands-on showcase at the Sugar Space Arts Warehouse in Salt Lake City—the birthplace of VR innovation. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the full potential of Pimax through two powerful demo setups:

Crystal Light – Action Gaming Rig

  • Lighthouse faceplate, 120Hz refresh rate, RTX 5090 GPU

  • Games: Half-Life: Alyx, Blade and Sorcery, Fallout VR, Arizona Sunshine

Crystal Super – Simulation Rig

  • High-end PC with HOTAS flight stick and racing wheel

  • Games: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Project Cars 2, DCS World

This event will also feature a special “VR Evolution” showcase, where attendees can compare the HTC Vive (2015) with the Pimax Crystal Super (2025)—a full decade of VR progress in one room.

Each attendee will have a 30-minute reserved timeslot to explore worlds of retina-level resolution, wide field of view, and ultra-smooth performance.

“The desire to share these capabilities—that’s what motivates me,” Cameron says. “I want others to feel the same ‘wow’ moment I felt the first time I put on the Crystal Super.”
