3× Frame Generation on Pimax: How to Set It Up and What Benefits It Can Bring
Wide field of view, razor-sharp clarity and Micro-OLED contrast are what make a Pimax headset special. They’re also why so many people hesitate before buying: “Will my PC be able to run it?”

A free community tool called OFXR Bridge is changing how many PC VR players answer that question. It uses optical-flow frame generation to multiply your frame rate in OpenXR games and VR mods, and early community results in sims like MSFS 2024, DCS and IL-2 have been striking.

Below we cover how to use it, why it makes a Pimax headset easier to say yes to, and answers to the questions players ask most.

OFXR Bridge is an independent community project and is still in pre-release. Results depend on your hardware, headset, game and settings.

Why This Matters If You’re Thinking About a Pimax Headset

A high-resolution headset asks your GPU to render a lot of pixels. Frame generation helps by letting the game render fewer real frames while the tool creates the frames in between. In practice, that can mean:
  • Smoother flight and racing on PCs that struggled before. An MSFS 2024 user who normally saw 28–35 FPS with maxed-out settings reported 70+ FPS with 3× frame generation. A DCS player on an RTX 4090 reported 90 FPS with everything maxed out. An IL-2 Korea player said large missions with more than 80 aircraft stayed excellent at 90 Hz.
  • A realistic path to high-res VR without a flagship GPU. One RTX 3070 owner reached a 72 FPS target at 72 Hz only with 3× frame generation, and still called the experience amazing.
  • Higher settings, not compromises. With less pressure on the GPU, you can aim to keep render resolution, textures and scenery detail high, which is what a premium headset is for in the first place.
  • Less risk before you buy. The tool is free, and it takes one click to arm or disarm, so you can see how far your current PC goes.
In short, the question is no longer only “is my GPU powerful enough?” but “how far can my GPU go with frame generation?” For many players, that makes a Pimax headset a much more reachable upgrade.

How to Use OFXR Bridge

Setup takes only a few minutes.
  1. Download the latest pre-release archive from GitHub Releases.
  2. Extract the complete archive to a writable folder. Keep OFXRBridgeTray.exe and the ofxr folder together.
  3. Run OFXRBridgeTray.exe. It will appear in your system tray.
  4. Right-click the tray icon and select the optical-flow backend and options.
  5. Select “Arm bridge until manual disarm.”
  6. Start your game normally. If you use an injector such as UEVR, arm OFXR Bridge before starting the game and leave it armed while the VR mod is injected.
  7. Select “Disarm bridge” or close the tray app when you’re finished.
Tips for the best first session
  • Choose a headset refresh rate close to your game’s frame rate multiplied by 2 or 3. For example, 40 FPS × 3 = 120 Hz.
  • On SteamVR, turn off “fixed frame rate at half” and Motion Smoothing for the game, and avoid stacking several frame generation or reprojection tools.
  • Use OFXR’s own FPS counter, because in-game counters can’t always tell generated frames from repeated ones.
  • Change one setting at a time so you know what’s helping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an RTX 4090? No. The best-known reports come from RTX 4090 owners, but an RTX 3070 user has also reported hitting a 72 FPS target with 3× frame generation. That said, results vary a lot between systems, and GPU model alone doesn’t decide the outcome. Drivers, VRAM, game settings and the runtime all play a part.

What does 3× frame generation actually do? Your game renders at a lower native frame rate, and the tool generates additional frames between them using optical flow, so the headset receives a much higher frame rate than your GPU is rendering natively.

Should I cap my game’s frame rate? It depends on your setup. Some MSFS users found that capping the game at one-third of the headset’s refresh rate (for example, 40 FPS on a 120 Hz headset) made 3× generation more stable. Others found no cap necessary. We suggest testing both.

Does it work with SteamVR or only with native OpenXR? Recent releases support frame generation on both SteamVR and Virtual Desktop, and community members have also tested it with native Pimax OpenXR. Image clarity and VRAM use can differ between driver setups, so it’s worth comparing them on your own system.

Which games does it work with? It targets OpenXR games and VR mods. The community has used it with MSFS 2024, DCS, IL-2, iRacing, Assetto Corsa, X-Plane and UEVR/OpenComposite titles. Check the project’s compatibility chart for the latest list.

Is it officially made or supported by Pimax? No. OFXR Bridge is an independent community project, and its features and compatibility can change as the developers release updates.

Will I see any visual artifacts? Some users report occasional one- or two-frame glitches during very fast head turns, and some report ghosting or reduced sharpness in specific setups. Others find the result excellent. Frame generation involves trade-offs, so test it in your own sim before settling on a configuration.

What about VRAM? High-resolution headsets use a lot of VRAM, and a few users have reported VRAM warnings after extended sessions. Lowering render resolution or texture settings can help, and recent releases have focused on reducing VRAM use.

Can I try it before buying a headset? Yes. The tool is free, so you can test it on your current setup and see what frame rates your PC can reach.
