About the Lighthouse Faceplate Connector on the Crystal Super

We'd like to clarify some confusion we've seen on Discord and Reddit concerning the Lighthouse Faceplate connection port on the Crystal Super, and highlight that each Crystal Super can use the upcoming Lighthouse Faceplate.

Here's how it stands:
  • During the design process of the Crystal Super Lighthouse Faceplate, we changed the design away from a 70-pin connector to a USB-C connector. This is not only because USB-C is a more modern and universal standard, but also because we cannot guarantee the future supply of the 70-pin connector.

  • The production of this 70-pin connector from our current supplier is set to be discontinued, and we're still looking for new suppliers. However, due to the specific nature of this part, we are not 100% confident in finding a supplier that meets our quality criteria.

  • This 70-pin connector was previously used for both the optical engine and the original Lighthouse Faceplate design. We have made the difficult decision to prioritize the remaining stock for Optical Engines, and to redesign the Lighthouse Faceplate to USB-C. We have taken this decision because the Optical Engine affects the core functionality of the headset, whereas the Lighthouse Faceplate is an optional accessory to replace our SLAM tracking algorithm (which we keep improving).
What this means:
  • The upcoming Lighthouse Faceplate for the Crystal Super, unlike the Crystal Light's Lighthouse Faceplate, will connect via USB-C. This is a native connection, with zero compromises to the performance.

  • Each Crystal Super has two USB-C accessory ports; one on the bottom of the optical engine, and one on the headset.

  • We have found that many Crystal (OG, Light and Super) users do not use any of the USB-C ports, and the vast majority of users do not use the bottom USB-C port. As such, we have designed the upcoming Lighthouse Faceplate for the Crystal Super to use the bottom USB-C port.

We do realize this is a change compared to the Crystal Light, and that may cause inconvenience for a select amount of users (especially those that want to use two USB-C ports).

If this is you, feel free to contact our customer support as we are able to install a PogoPin connector in your headset that is compatible with the upcoming Lighthouse Faceplate, freeing up the bottom USB-C slot. (Alternatively, we can provide a guide for expert users to assemble this themselves.)

In either case, we want to make clarify that each Crystal Super produced is 100% compatible with the upcoming Lighthouse Faceplate, to work flawlessly with Base Station tracking.
